WHAT IS ADAS AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR WINDSCREENS?

What is ADAS and why do you keep hearing about it?

In short ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.  This term encompasses a whole range of safety systems that are found in most new vehicles on the market.  They can include Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Assisted/Automatic Parking, Collision Warning/Control, Lane Departure Warning,  Adaptive Lighting and Hill Descent Control to name a few.  Many new vehicles come with one, all or a combination of ADAS technology.

You keep hearing about it because nearly all new vehicles are fitted with at least one type of ADAS feature -crazy right!  Well, moving forward into the next few years these features will be like central locking and electric windows - a feature that was  once found only on some cars and is now standard on all vehicles . So prepare yourselves technology in vehicles is only going to increase and become more and more advanced.

What does this mean for my windscreen replacement you ask?

In short recalibration equals SAFETY.

Some of these feature rely on a forward facing camera to operate effectively and provide you with the safety systems that come with your vehicle.  When you have damaged your windscreen and it needs replacing, to maintain the safety systems in the vehicle the cameras need to recalibrated, if this is not done then the safety systems may not work properly.  There are two types of calibration required after a windscreen replacement depending on which safety systems your vehicle is fitted with.

DYNAMIC: This type of calibration requires the vehicle to be driven at a certain speed and on certain roads to recalibrate the camera system.

STATIC: As the name suggests this type of calibration requires the vehicle to remain stationary and lock onto target boards to recalibrate the camera system.
